A Rose without a Name

“A rose by any other name is still a rose.” Shakespeare.

My red rose may have a name, but I don’t know it.  It came with the house we bought. I’ve searched a bit for a match in rose catalogs, but there are so many rose varieties out there!  Since Shakespeare’s time many a new rose has been bred: there’s a myriad of rose traits and types, nowadays, and I just can’t pinpoint mine.

A threesome of buds

So, I’ll rephrase Shakespeare in my red rose’s honor: “a rose without a name is Still a rose.”  It’s a beautiful rose with deep red petals, flecked with bits of black. Often it will put forth groups, or small bouquets, of roses together.

This is probably a Spring flush–when the roses bloom the most

I’ve gathered my favorite pictures of this rose for this post. Most pictures are from last spring or this. I’m sure there are a few in-between. Enjoy!

A sick day: Rose Measles, aka, blackspot
Fine black lines streak the petal edges
This series has pink penstemon in the background, a perennial which hasn’t rebounded this year.
Not the most beautiful of photos but one that showcases this roses darker days. Sometimes the colors are just darker. (I’ve since learned, by the way, to prune out the center of the rose bush for better air circulation)
The edges catch the sunlight’s shimmer
An autumn rose. The season is evidenced by the yellow chrysanthemum in the background.
