A few years ago, I wrote a post about how to grow tulips in Georgia. Today, you get the super-quick summary: tulip bulbs need to be adequately chilled in order to produce beautiful flowers. For us in lower Georgia, that means a long trip to the fridge. 🙂
This year, however, defied the norm. We had a couple weeks of very cold temperatures. Like, it didn’t get over freezing on a least one day! That’s about unheard of down here. It snowed and the snow stuck around for more than a few hours. We could still see it three days later!
Well, after all that chilly excitement, I discovered proof that more drama had unfolded under the ground. My tulips came up and bloomed! These were lovely red tulips which I had planted five years ago. They had pretty much melted into a show of leaves and stunted blooms. This year, three of them bloomed beautifully! Well, three may be an exaggeration. At least one of the buds mysteriously disappeared before it opened. I think an enthusiastic child may have had a part in that.
For the record, here they are: Tulips blooming in Georgia!
